2024 SESSION OFF TO A COLD START

Literally and figuratively. Bitter cold embraced Springfield this week just as it did the rest of Illinois and the Midwest, so the House has canceled a scheduled session day tomorrow (Senate may do the same) and the Capitol is quiet this morning. The next scheduled session days are in February. The Tribune has quotes from the four leaders and the governor on an outlook for the 2024 session:

HOUSE NAMES GONG GERSHOWITZ LEADER ON NEW ARRIVALS

North Suburban legislator Jennifer Gong Gershowitz has been appointed by Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch to lead the House response to the influx of migrants and refugees coming to Illinois. JGG, as she is known in the Capitol, is an immigration lawyer and a skilled negotiator. (She is as well an ally of the IVCA.)

Rep. Gong Gershowitz is tasked with addressing the humanitarian and legal issues involved as well as the significant financial pressures which come with health care, housing, and additional human services. The article below summarizes the status of arrivals and the demand from Illinois that Texas halt its practice of sending busloads of people to Illinois:

NEW LEGISLATOR FOR NORTH SUBURBAN DISTRICT

Rep. Tracy Katz Muhl is now in office taking over for former Rep. Jonathan Carroll. The 57th District covers Glencoe to the east and goes west to Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove and north into parts of Lake County.  Katz Muhl is an attorney who has been active in Democratic politics in Cook and Lake counties.
